And… It’s submitted.

July 10th, 2008 by Celia

Half-were House, an anthology made of three inter-twined stories by Celia Kyle, Darragha Foster and Mima, has been submitted.  Halelujah and pop the cork on the champagne.  Anyone who thinks an inter-twined anthology sounds like a good idea… step away.  Step far away.  Writing our inidividual stories was probably easy on all of us, but then editing for continuity… That sucketh.  Sucketh HARD.

But, it’s over, it’s in and now we wait to hear from the powers that be Tina Burns.

Tina-Have I mentioned lately that you are a goddess among mortals?

squee New Blurbage!

July 10th, 2008 by Celia

So, I just finished polishing a new novella for inclusion in an anthology.  It’s going to be submitted to Liquid Silver Books in the next day or two, but you gotta read this blurb.  It’s da bomb!

Gina’s got a problem. Okay, she doesn’t think it’s a problem, but the pride that kicked her to the curb sure does. She feels perfect in every way.  Curves in all the right places and an attitude that just won’t quit, she’s got it all. And then some. Now her tail… In her mind, it’s just an added bonus. But in the mind of the prides, her ability to only grow a tail proves that she’s not were enough and too much kitty for humans. Good thing she’s found two men who can’t get enough of each other, her and her tail.

Molten Silver: Kitty getting frisky with two men at once while they get frisky with each other. Also contains voyeur kitty and a feline who likes to be filled. *wink*

Boo-to-the-yeah!

Prodding the Pub: Liquid Silver Books

July 9th, 2008 by Celia

So, I decided to poke and prod at my publishers to hopefully give some insight into what works, what doesn’t and your publisher’s favorite chocolate should bribes become an option. Okay, bribing is entirely optional, but…

My first publisher is Tina Burns from Liquid Silver Books.  Here’s a look at my questions and her answers as I poke her with a stick.

Tell readers and authors a bit about Liquid Silver Books’ history.

Atlantic Bridge Publishing was founded in early ‘99 by Raven and Mike as an Internet Marketing company, Linda went the pub route soon after with ABP which pubbed its first book in Jan 2000, while Mike stayed in marketing until LSB got busy.

In 2002, they branched off AB and founded Liquid Silver Books, the erotic romance imprint of AB. LSB pubbed its first book Jan 2003. Until mid 2004, LSB pubbed one book a week when we moved to two a week since–450 books published so far. We’ve enjoyed steady stable progress mainly due to excellent staff who have been with us since they joined, guided by Raven and Mike’s decades of corporate and small business experience.

LSB is all about quality and long-term viability for everyone involved readers, authors and staff. From start-up to the consolidation business phases, LSB has been successful and is now embarking on an expansion phase over the next few years.

In your opinion, what does a perfect cover/query letter contain?

The perfect cover letter for me should be in the body of their submission email, not as an attachment, that way I’ve got a quick reference guide on them and their book.   I like to see a little writing bio on the author, if they’ve pubbed before, in what market, if they’ve won awards, etc.  I keep that information in the back of my head when I’m reading submissions.  It would also include what I like to call a snapshot synopsis, which is a smidge more than a blurb.

What is the ideal manuscript length to page count ratio for a synopsis? (1 page per 10k?)

Okay, here’s a Tina secret. I very rarely utilize the synopsis. *gasp* I know. Now, don’t go thinking you don’t have to send one in, because they do come in handy when I’m on the fence after reading a partial.  I’ve not really run into an instance where I noticed there needed to be a specific ratio, but a page per 10k sounds reasonable, or a page per chapter which ever is longer.

Will a poorly written synopsis keep you from reading or even considering the partial or do you give authors a chance?

Actually I read the submission first because of that reason. I started out reading the synopsis and found more often than not, if I didn’t like the book from the synopsis, once I got into the actual submission it was compelling and well written. So yes, if your synopsis is poorly written, choppy, unfocused, I’m going to assume your writing is too. That’s not always the case, which is why I’ve switched to reading the synopsis last.  As I said above, if after three chapters I’m not sold on your book 100%, that synopsis which tells me about the rest of the story might just get you an email from me requesting to see the full.

What makes a good story for Liquid Silver Books?  (Engaging, arousing, action packed, etc.)

All of the above.  The easiest way to know that you’re book will work for LSB is to ask yourself this:  If I took the sex scenes out of the book, would it still be a great book?  If the answer’s yes, then send it on in!  If the answer’s no, and your plot won’t hold up a feather, then go back to the drawing board.

Name some “wow” manuscripts from the publisher’s catalog that you’ve contracted.  (Works that had you hitting refresh as you waited for the full to come through from the author.)

Oh, now you’re putting me on the spot! *Disclaimer* The following statements in no way constitute favoritism. *Disclaimer* Will that hold up in court?

My one and only “find” is Annie Dean. I came across her blog, clicked to her website and read some of the excerpts she had for books yet to be published and immediately emailed her asking her to send one to me. She did and we published Her Alibi a few months later.  She’s busy now w/ print contracts under her other pen name and with much success, but I’m hoping when she gets time she send me another bone. J

Pretty much anything by Mima I devour, her Within series is very unique, emotional, and HOT. A newer author Roscoe James is an excellent writer. I helped him tweek the emotional aspect of his stories a little to appeal more to our mostly female readership, but I think readers will be pleasantly surprised at the depth you’ll see in Roscoe’s writing. He paints a very good picture in your head.  I really enjoyed the Dragon’s Disciple Series by Barbara Sheridan and Anne Cain, they push the boundaries in a lot of ways, yet the story is told with color, finesse, and mega man heat. The most recent “WOW” is the upcoming Echo of Distant Thunder by Philippa Grey-Gerou and Emmery Sanborne. I finished the submission in one sit down and then emailed them saying, “Please tell me you have a lot more books to this series and can I have them all please?”

What is your acceptance ratio?

See, now you’re getting into math and that’s so-o-o not my forte. Hmm, here’s a guess, this is by no means a scientifically formulated number. Out of the full submissions we request, I’d say 95% we make an offer on. Current LSB authors automatically send full manuscripts, and of those about 98% with those 2% coming back to us after revisions.  The percentage drops when you look at the initial first time partial submission to requested full, probably around 40%.

Head hopping?  How often is too often to move from one character to the other?  Assuming, of course, that proper publisher guidelines are followed when showing the change between POVs.

This is one topic I’m a stickler on, nothing pulls me out of a story more than head hopping and tons of back story, though that’s for another day. Very few people can do Head Hopping seamlessly. Nora Roberts does it perfectly.  I can think of only one book I’ve contracted that the movement between point of view was smooth enough and worked for the book, that I let it go.  I like to see at minimum one scene from per POV.  Here’s where it gets tricky. If you need to show both POVs in a “scene”, start in one and finish in the other. That way you’re not jumping back and forth.

What is the publisher searching for in particular at this time?  (Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Contemp, Historical, etc.)

We’re always open to any genre. Always. There are reader trends but we don’t close and open submissions based on that.  I really like unique stories, something that’s not very prevalent already in the ER industry. Steampunk anyone?

Typical publisher response time?  (At the time of this interview)

Right now we’re kicking, we’ve increased our staff and that’s helped a lot in our response time, so we’re turning full submissions around in 3 to 4 weeks now. Unlike other publishers, our editors don’t do any acquiring. That’s completely handled by the staff, so we’ve got 4 readers right now and will soon have a 5th.

Is an auto-responder in use at the publisher or are individual acknowledgements of receipt sent for each submission?

Nope, all emails are personally written by me or one of the other staff. With my transition to Publisher, we’ve hired a new Acquisitions Director, Tracey West who starts in August, so she’ll probably be handling most of the responses starting then.  Personalized attention is something we pride ourselves on at LSB and I have a virtual “open office” policy myself.

If a response is not received within the stated response time, how long should the author wait before sending an inquiry?

If an author hasn’t received an initial email from us after a week, they can ping to make sure we’ve received the submission. I always reply with our current turn-around time, so if you haven’t heard a yes or no after that time, then ping us again.

Describe the publisher’s print program (if any).

Liquid Silver Books is an eBook publisher and that will always be our focus. In the past we’ve done print on demand for those authors with long enough books attending conferences, but last year we started printing top sellers through Lightening Source, still print on demand.  We’ve seen too many e-publishers go under from the weight of the financial burden print runs put on a publisher. We want to do our best and fulfill our author’s dreams of a book in print, at the same time, we have an obligation to them to stay in business and continue to provide them their sales revenue.  We’ve taken the role of the Turtle in this race, and as the eBook world expands into more readers that translates to more sales…more books…more authors…more opportunities, one step at a time.

So, that’s it.  I hope I asked questions that aspiring authors and veterans alike would like to know the answers to prior to submitting.  I’m hoping to poke a few other publishers and post their responses as well. :D

Brownie Points

July 7th, 2008 by Celia

Ah, brownie points.  I’d like you to consider the following conversation to see just how quickly earned brownie points can wither and die a horrible death.

Setting: Celia and Mr.Kyle snuggling in bed Saturday morning.  Pulling themselves awake so that they can go to breakfast.

Mr. Kyle:  I had the weirdest dream.

Me: MmHm…

*snuggle, burrow*

Mr. Kyle: This woman, she was beautiful and she wanted to give me a blow job.

Me: Mm?

*getting closer to being fully awake.  The word blow job will do that to you.*

Mr. Kyle: Yeah, but I wouldn’t let her do it.  I have you and I love you.

*Awwww…  Closed mouth smooches follow, cause Ew! Morning Breath! But later, He’s so getting laid.*

*smooches end and we lapse into a few moments of groggy silence*

Mr. Kyle:  I did good, right?  I mean, I asked my friends, in the dream, if a blow job was cheating and they said yes. So, I didn’t do it.

Me:  You had to ask if a blow job was cheating and then you didn’t do it?

See how quickly brownie points dissolve into wisps of smoke?

July 3rd, 2008 by Celia

I don’t have much to say today…  I finished the initial draft of Piece of Tail for my part in the Half-were House anthology with Mima and Darragha Foster on Monday.  Mima tore it into pieces on Tuesday and now I’ll spend the weekend making it shiny.  Once I get it less craptastic, I’ll post a little somethin’ for blog readers.  :D

On to today’s thrill.  Hopefully it’ll make Thursday go a bit faster for ya’ll.

Coming Soon from LSB: Furry, Fluffy & Wild

June 25th, 2008 by Celia

O. M. G.  Somewhere, in a past life, I was the whore of the cover gods and now they are smiling down on me.  Want proof?  Kablam!

Were What? by Celia Kyle

Lyla’s on the run from her pack’s omega. Since he’s at the bottom of the totem pole in her pack, this should be simple, right? Tell that to her aching lungs and jiggling thighs. She’s never been one to go with the flow. So when her alpha orders her to submit to mating with the omega she’s not about to start now. Good thing she runs into (literally) a big hunk of man who can make the scariest of wolves tuck tail and run.

Michael’s had enough of weres to last a lifetime. After being caught in the middle of a territory war while in Brazil between the Pumas and Jaguars, he sure as hell doesn’t want anything to do with the trouble following Lyla. But apparently no one told that to his cock.

Blue Moon Rising by Nina Pierce

Tension between the cougar and wolf shifters in Lonesome Fork, Montana is spiraling out of control. With the full moon only days away and fear and the body count rising, Chief of Police, and head of the wolf shifter council, COLE TAKODO is trying to bring peace to both humans and shifters alike. But with the head of the cougar council, KURT HANSLEY, thwarting his attempts, it appears nothing will heal the growing rift. When orphan JAYDA KYNSLYN strolls into town, rumors of polymorphic shifters come to life begin to circulate.

Two men want to claim Jayda as mate: one will stand with her and unite the shifter clans; the other will possess her and reign supreme over the human population. With the Blue Moon Rising Jayda’s decision will determine the future for all of them.

Beauty is a Beast by Tina Holland

Welcome to the future! The year is 3025 and humans are fast becoming extinct. Nizhoni of Mojave Earth Clan knows her spirit guide will protect by giving her the power of the wolf. When she unwittingly bites another human she flees.

Michael of the Air Clan has searched for the woman he called Beauty who turned him into a creature of the moon. When he finds her living among the Mojave, he believes he can finally claim her. There’s only one problem she’s already married.

Together Nizhoni and Michael must battle her former lover, the Yee Naaldlooshi or feared skin-walker. The fate of their love and humankind hang in the balance. If Beauty can’t have her mate and save the world she’s going to be a real Beast.

Squee! Newest Cover from Resplendence Publishing!

June 15th, 2008 by Celia

Ooh!  This is my first work with Resplendence Publishing and I couldn’t be happier with the cover.  I filled out a detailed form and the cover artist took my words and created this gorgeousness.  Yay!  I love it!

It’s fantabulous, yes?  I’m giddy with excitement.  Here’s a quick blurb and Fiery Ember will be available on 7/8/08!  Woot!  That’s just around the corner!

Fiery Ember

Ember Ellason is a darned good secretary.  True, she’d like to be more, but her step-mother runs Ellason Advertising now that her father has passed and Claudette, her step-mother, feels Ember is only good enough to fetch coffee… barely.  Not content with her life as a secretary, she takes night classes to get her degree in marketing.  Good thing, too.  Because when Claudette, nor her horrid daughters, show up for the meeting with the biggest client they could ever land, Ember steps in to save the day.  Sort of.  Clementine and Ember sound alike… in a way.  A little white lie about her name couldn’t be the end of the world, right?  Besides, what could it hurt?

Paul Ashe needs a new ad campaign and advertising agency for his company.  He’s found  the perfect company with the perfect proposal.  Too bad his body is a little too interested in the voluptuous Clementine, beautiful Em.  Though, she doesn’t look like an Clementine to him with her fiery red hair and blazing green eyes.  And then he can’t seem to secure a date with the elusive woman after their first encounter.  Not that he should since they just began working together. No bother, rules were meant to be broken… Besides, what could it hurt?

Growl

June 4th, 2008 by Celia

Just a little something that I submitted to a flash fiction call that was recently rejected.  Thought ya’ll might enjoy the darker side of Celia….

Growl
By Celia Kyle

The growl woke her. Deep, guttural, hungry and low, it crept through the room and reverberated through her bones.

It’d gotten him.

Somehow through the night, the disease seeped through the cracks in the walls and took hold of her beloved.

The now familiar sound of the slow scraping of feet against the concrete floor filled the once silent room. She pressed her back against the wall, thankful for the solid support as she clutched the blood-stained handle of her hatchet. She took solace in its solid, balanced weight and razor sharp edge. It hadn’t failed her yet.

The scraping grew closer.

Her heart beat double-time, threatening to burst from her chest as she waited. Rushing forward too soon could prove to be disastrous. She’d seen it happen to one too many of her friends. She’d watched them suffer as the creatures tore them apart and then, when they re-animated, she’d cleaved their heads from their bodies.

The creature staggered through the moonlight toward her. Only feet separated them now. She begged her heart to slow as soulless eyes bore into her. Not long now.

She adjusted her grip and took aim as the creature came into range. It bared its teeth and opened its jaws wide as if preparing to bite. With one quick blow, she decapitated the creature, its rancid blood coating the bare floor. It was done.

Dang, she’d loved that dog.

A hiss filled the night and she cringed. Looked like she had a date with her cat now, too.

Adventures in Stupidland: NKOTB

May 19th, 2008 by Celia

Once in a lifetime thing going on here folks.  Yup, this installment of AiS is not about Me, but about NKOTB.

I’m about to date myself, but when New Kids on the Block came out, I was very nearly their number one fan.  I would have been their number one fan had my mother found the NKOTB fabric at Wal-Mart and made me the curtains I asked for, but whatever.

So, NKOTB has decided to try and make a comeback.  Um, who told them this was a good idea?  I mean, seriously?  Dudes, you’re old.  I mean, I’m old so I know you sure as hell are.  Leave the teeny boppin’ to the teeny boppers and move on.  You no longer have the pre-adolescent high pitched voices you once had and instead of looking cool as you pop and lock on the stage, you look like my dad trying to bust the robot.  N.O.

Don’t believe me?  Think it can’t be that bad?  Let me assure you…  it is.

I rest my case.

Poking it with a stick

May 13th, 2008 by Celia

I discovered a new social networking site, quite by accident, when perusing a couple of sex blogs.  (Yes, blogs about sex.  *gasp*)  Anyway, I looked at the front page, cocked my head to the side and squinted my eyes at it, then straightened, brow furrowed and continued to stare. Huh. They have a social networking site.  Very cool, my mind said.  Very cool, indeed.  I snagged the link and ran off to share with my author friends…

Now, we are all poking it with a stick as we decide who will be the first to jump into fetlife. (www.fetlife.com)  I know that there are several blogs I read whose masters/mistresses hop on over there so I’m curious if they read my blog and want to comment on the site.  WendyAvah Jefferson? (though he is in the middle of moving)

So, I guess until we hear from an actual member that the bdsm authors won’t get flogged for having book writing as a fetish, we’ll all continue poking the site with our imaginary sticks.

Mmmmm… Monday!

May 12th, 2008 by Celia

So, how’d your Mother’s Day go? I’m a mom, sorta. I have three balls of fur that I call my own. This, of course, does not include Mr. Kyle though he did purchase a card on the cat’s behalf. Yup, I woke up to a beautiful card, directly from the kitties. He’s such a sap, but I lurve him. *sigh*

I spent the weekend writing and reading. Reading was the best part. You see, I’m working on an anthology with Mima and Darragha Foster and I figured I should read what my fellow authors had penned recently.  I started with Mima…

O. M. G. Her Within series is beyond words.  I’ve read the first three books in the series and I can’t wait to get home and buy the fourth so I can read it too.  I’ve already emailed her gushing madly about my love of the series and threatening bodily harm if she doesn’t give me more.  *sigh*  Love shifters?  Love possessive men who are VERY growling and hot sexin?  This series is like a drug to a shifter loving reader.  Not. Enough.  Ever.

Check out her books HERE

Now, back to the EDJ with me.  Have a good MmmmMonday!

Emergency Review System: Love Defined

May 6th, 2008 by Celia

This is not a test.  Had this been a test, you wouldn’t be waiting patiently (or not) for this fantabulous review I just received.  Normally, I don’t scream from the rooftops about reviews, but this one just rocked my sox a little too hard.  Or maybe, just hard enough. :D

From:  http://www.bfdblog.com/2008/05/06/erotic-book-review

This site is a FA (fat activism/body positive) blog I found about a month ago and fell in love.  Fluffy chicks who are proud!  Woot!  That is MY place to BE!  I started chatting with Mo Pie and she asked for permission to offer up one of my books for review to her readers.  I was all “hells yeah!”

And here are a few snippets of the review that has me partying like it’s 1999:

Readers might find the relationship arc both gratifying and recognizable as Ginny initially shys away from Mattias in embarrassment about unshaven legs and in doubt that he’d be interested in a body like her own: a fat body. While insistent on being loved as she is (on revealing her naked body to her lover, she says, “This is me. Get a good look. I won’t have you telling me to lose thirty pounds in two months. . .”), she had struggled with fear about how the man of her dreams will respond to her body. Any reader who’s wondered something similar will know how gratifying it is when he responds with a full panoply of erotic moves and a resounding assurance that her body, exactly as it is, is exactly what he wants. The romance is sweet and human, and Ginny’s quirks as well as her doubts serve to make it real.

AND

If you’re looking for some good, clean fun – stay away from the erotic shelves. If you’re looking for some good, sexy fun involving a delightful fat woman and a man who both loves her and aims to please, this is a great choice.

The reviewer also mentioned that my fluffy lovin’ needs a bit of work and Mr. Kyle has already offered his services.  :D
